Our path to climate neutrality

As part of the global Paris Climate Agreement of 12.12.2015 of the UN Climate Change Conference and the necessary reduction of CO ₂ emissions, the Arntz Optibelt Group aims to operate its sites in a climate-neutral manner under its own steam. At the same time, activities are being undertaken to achieve sustainable and long-term improvements in the value chain. These activities support the UN's sustainability goals:

  • Goal 7 - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
  • Goal 13 - Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

"We are aiming for climate neutrality by 2040 at the latest. At the same time, we are calling on our suppliers and business partners to follow suit and expect all of them to reduce their CO₂ emissions by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2040."

Climate neutrality in our own production

The Arntz Optibelt Group emitted around 20,000 tons of CO ₂ from its own production in 2022. We have set ourselves the goal of being climate-neutral by 2040 at the latest. This includes measures to continuously improve our energy efficiency, the use of energy from renewable sources and replacing the fuels we use with lower-carbon alternatives. To this end, we have been recording our annual carbon footprint for several years now and have it externally audited and verified by TÜV.

Value chain

In order to be able to offer a selection of climate-neutral products in the future, a holistic view - including of the value chain - is essential. The majority of emissions are generated in the areas of transportation, purchasing raw materials and services (Scope 3). However, the finished product also causes CO₂ emissions as soon as it leaves our factories - during delivery or at the end of the product's life.

We want to influence our value chains accordingly and help reduce energy and material consumption through the further development of our products (e.g. durability, increased performance) and their use by our customers.

Intermediate goals on the road to climate neutrality

Below you will find our interim targets for 2030 and examples of the measures we are taking to achieve them. We aim to have our targets verified by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to confirm that our targets represent a reduction pathway in line with the 1.5° target of the Paris Agreement.

Electricity needs

Intermediate goal:

The Arntz Optibelt Group aims to reduce external purchases of the main energy sources by 30 percent by the end of 2030, based on the quantities consumed in 2022 (kWh/t of good goods).

Actions:

  • For several years now, we have been investing in the expansion of PV systems in order to produce our own electricity requirements as far as possible.
  • Where technically feasible, we are constantly converting our machines, systems and processes from gas to electricity so that production runs on renewable energy.

CO₂-assignment

Intermediate goal:

The Arntz Optibelt Group aims to reduce the discharge of CO ₂ into the environment by 30 percent by the end of 2030 based on the quantities consumed in 2022.

Actions:

  • The Arntz Optibelt Group has been using green electricity at all European production sites since mid-2021.
  • We are constantly working to increase efficiency.
  • Our German production sites have had DIN ISO 50001 certification for many years.
Value Chain

Intermediate goal:

The Arntz Optibelt Group aims to reduce CO ₂ emissions by 10 percent by the end of 2030 on the basis of the quantities (t CO2/t good goods) discharged in 2022.
